“Connected”
January 28, 2010

On January 28th the New York Design Center hosted the first “Connected” event in the newly expanded Michael Tavano showroom. The conversation was moderated by designer Michael Tavano and included panelists, Elizabeth Closmore integrated marketing for House Beautiful, Brad Ford founder of Brad Ford ID and Designtherapy.com, Alix Lerman director of marketing for The New York Design Center and Jan MacLatchie president of Jan MacLatchie Brand Strategist.
Eager design enthusiasts joined the discussion that focused on favorite websites, online digital language and how being "connected" is beneficial to the design industry. Twitter, Facebook and well-educated blogs were the main focus of the discussion and all panelists agreed that this new online community is an essential part of their business and everyday interactions.

Highlights from the discussion:
Elizabeth Closmore stated, House Beautiful understands that “people don’t want to do business with a business, they want to do business with a friend, and therefore we use social media to expand our brand and to add personality to the pages of our magazine.”
Brad Ford explains one of the benefits of his successful design-oriented blog “it has helped me get my name out there. I’ve had clients view my blog; they liked what they saw and called for a consultation”
Alix Lerman believes that “social media helps a company create a 'well-rounded' identity. Our company, the NYDC tweets about a broad range of interesting topics, not just things that are specifically brand related. These topics would not normally be included on our website but allow us to connect with our community through a different outlet.”
Jan MacLatchie spoke from experience, “In the high-end world, which we are all a part of, you will always gain the most clients via word of mouth, but you gain credibility from your list of Facebook friends.” “Twitter and Facebook are all about sharing. It filters information that you are interested in and allows you to learn more about people and what everyone's talking about. It keeps me and my clients in the know.”

"Just do it!” was the consensus of the social media discussion, “jump in with both feet.” There are so many free outlets and opportunities offered through the internet, that one should take advantage of. It’s a give and take relationship that requires devotion, but is a fantastic way to create credibility and allow people to learn about you and your brand.
