DIFFA'S DINING BY DESIGN
GALA DINNER
MARCH 30, 2009

The New York Design Center was delighted to once again support the Design Industry Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA)’s Dining by Design 2009 as Industry sponsor. For the second year in a row, the NYDC chose innovative designer Michael Tavano to design its table. The magnificent event was held at Pier 94 from March 26th through March 30th.

When the New York Design Center asked designer Michael Tavano to design its 2009 DIFFA Dining by Design table, he began with a small delft inspired teacup and used it to create the spectacular structure that became the setting for the NYDC dining environment. The graffiti painted motif reminiscent of this seemingly classic pattern was enough to send Tavano into a whirlwind of ideas.

Inspired by New York City, the table blends both the urban and luxe worlds, creating “Fine Dining. Urban Living.” Tavano’s mission was to create a dining experience that combined the exceptional design from NYDC showrooms with edgy street art. A luxurious dining scene set under a bridge-like structure, the interior filled with wildly colorful graffiti.

Artist Christian Avila was commissioned to bring the walls of the bridge-like structure to life and express his art form. Motivated by the architectural lines of furniture, Avila used floor plans as his canvas and metaphors to express his interpretation of DIFFA’s cause. Avila depicted AIDS as a Ninja, the silent killer. He placed the Japanese symbol for life above the masked figure, he represents how far we have come in fighting this disease. However, the frowning clown shows that AIDS is still serious and there is no “clowning around about it.”

The 2009 New York Design Center Dining setting speaks not only to the design crowd with its elegant furniture, glistening crystal, opulent silver and beautiful structuring, it conveys a deeper message exposing AIDS awareness through a new approach; a guttural art form paired with the beauty of interior design.

The New York Design Center would like to thank the following partners who contributed in achieving Tavano’s vision: Artistic Tile, Auffray & Co., Baker Knapp & Tubbs, Christofle, Lovegrove & Repucci, Metropolitan Lighting’s manufacturer Schonbek, Michael Tavano (Showroom), Orrefors Kosta Boda, Roubini Rugs and Studio Dekor Lighting.
