Celebrated architect Eero Saarinen drew a crowd at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) on June 2, 2009. The New York Design Center and the MCNY proudly offered a preview of the upcoming exhibition; Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future. Architects, design enthusiasts and museum supporters joined together to take advantage of the “Inside Look” panel discussion, led by exhibition curator Donald Albrecht.
Saarinen’s prolific career includes such masterpieces as the publicly recognized Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the sweeping curves of the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport and the notable Tulip Chair. The exhibition, slated to open November 2009, will further explore these remarkable achievements, including large-scale building mock-ups, never-before-seen drawings, photographs and furniture.
The “Inside Look” panel, moderated by Albrecht included, Rosamond Fletcher, Director of Exhibitions at New York’s Center for Architecture, Alexandra Lange, architecture and design writer and Paul Makovsky, editorial director of Metropolis Magazine. Attendees were immersed with knowledge during the panel discussion and regrouped in the rotunda with mouthwatering caramelized bacon, Scandinavian cucumber tea sandwiches and other savory treats.
The exclusive panel offered insight into Saarinen’s exceptional body of work and provided a unique opportunity to preview the upcoming exhibition. The ticketed event raised approximately $20,000, directly benefitting the November installation.
Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is the third collaboration of the New York Design Center and the Museum of the City of New York. Previous collaborations include The High Style of Dorothy Draper and Paris/New York: Design Fashion Culture 1925-1940.
