On view through December 22, 2026, the exhibition brings together more than 80 exceptional works created between the late 1920s and the mid-1970s, exploring Ponti's remarkable achievements across furniture, lighting, ceramics, silver, enameled metalwork, original drawings, and textiles.

Featuring works created across some five decades, Designing Optimism reveals the remarkable consistency of Ponti's vision across disciplines while underscoring why his designs remain as fresh, influential, and relevant today as ever. The exhibition is the only commercial selling exhibition devoted to Gio Ponti presented in the United States, bringing together an exceptional group of works drawn from important private collections in the U.S. and Europe. Many have not been publicly exhibited—or available on the market—for more than twenty years.

Organized by Paul Donzella and Brian Kish, the exhibition is the culmination of tireless research and over three years of sourcing, built upon decades of scholarship and longstanding relationships with collectors. Many of the featured works have remained in private hands for generations, making this extraordinary gathering possible only through years of careful research and collaboration.

"What has always fascinated me about Gio Ponti is that no matter the medium—whether he was designing a chair, a lamp, a ceramic vessel, or an entire building—you immediately recognize the same joyful spirit and unmistakable sense of elegance. The work is in and of itself a celebration of design," said Paul Donzella, founder of Donzella Ltd. "Bringing these pieces together offers a rare opportunity to experience the extraordinary range of his creativity while revealing the remarkably consistent philosophy that guided everything he created. I hope visitors leave with an even deeper appreciation for why Ponti remains one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century."

The exhibition arrives at a moment of renewed international attention to Ponti’s legacy. In 2026, Italy is establishing a museum dedicated to his work, while the influence of the architect, designer, artist, publisher, and theorist continues to be felt across contemporary visual culture. Domus, the magazine Ponti founded in 1928, remains an influential international voice in architecture and design today.

“2026 marks a reevaluation of Gio Ponti’s place in modern Western visual culture,” said Brian Kish. “Twenty-five years after I curated a Ponti museum retrospective in New York, I see his work gaining new relevance. His confident agility across architecture, fine art, design, and publishing; his endless reinvention of methods and styles; and his refusal to be tied down to a particular field of activity are better understood than ever in the 21st century. Working on this project with Paul Donzella has become a multidimensional endeavor that aligns perfectly with this uncategorizable inventor and polymath. Paul’s exhibition title, Gio Ponti: Designing Optimism, is spot on, reflecting the generous abundance of this compelling creator.”

Why This Exhibition Matters

Unlike the previous Gio Ponti exhibitions presented by American museums in 2001 and 2017, Designing Optimism brings together an exceptional group of works available for acquisition while exploring the extraordinary breadth of Ponti's work across multiple disciplines.

Rather than focusing on a single period or medium, the exhibition reveals Ponti's lifelong conviction that architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, and decorative arts should exist in harmony to enrich everyday life. Together, these works reveal the remarkable consistency of his vision across nearly six decades of creative practice and help explain why his designs continue to feel as modern, elegant, and inspiring today as when they were first conceived.

About the Organizers

For more than three decades, Paul Donzella has established Donzella Ltd as one of America's leading galleries specializing in historic Italian postwar design. Throughout his career, he has organized important exhibitions devoted to T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Paul László, Osvaldo Borsani, and other influential designers, while placing exceptional twentieth-century works with leading collectors, museums, and institutions.

Designing Optimism is the culmination of an entire career of research and over three years of sourcing, reflecting Donzella's longstanding relationships with collectors throughout the United States and Europe and his commitment to presenting historically important design with exceptional scholarship.

Brian Kish is internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Gio Ponti and twentieth-century Italian design. His 2001 exhibition, Gio Ponti: A Metaphysical World, presented at the Queens Museum in New York, was the first museum exhibition devoted to Gio Ponti in the United States and introduced many American audiences to the designer’s work.

Over the past twenty-five years, Kish has contributed to major publications, museum exhibitions, auction catalogues, and scholarship, including two acclaimed Taschen publications, the monograph Gio Ponti and Entryways of Milan, as well as the exhibition Tutto Ponti, Gio Ponti Archi-Designer at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In addition, Kish works closely with the Gio Ponti Archives in Milan.
