200 Lex Required Reading: WNWN Edition
At the New York Design Center, we are continually inspired by the creative voices that shape our design community. “200 Lex Required Reading” highlights books we can’t wait to get lost in from our favorite interior designers, tastemakers, and visionaries.
In celebration of WNWN on September 18th, we are taking a look at new books whose authors will also be speakers. Be sure to add these titles to your reading list and stay tuned for more titles not to miss at WNWN!
“A Welcome Home” by Alexandra Kaehler with Hadley Keller and photographs by Aimée Mazzenga
Interior designer Alexandra Kaehler is celebrated for her refined use of color, pattern, fabric, and finishes, as well as her inventive decorating solutions that result in undeniably beautiful spaces. Guided by the belief that function is as important as form, she creates homes that are authentic to the lives of the families who inhabit them—spaces that feel as practical as they are inviting.
In A Welcome Home, Kaehler showcases eight residences designed for young families, captured in more than 200 photographs. The book highlights her playful use of prints, wallpapers, and textiles from storied houses such as Schumacher and Lee Jofa, while also offering a masterclass in blending style with day-to-day livability. With its elegant design and richly layered rooms, A Welcome Home is both an inspiration and guide to creating spaces that balance beauty and purpose.
Don’t miss Alexandra at WNWN at 3:15pm in the Lexington Showroom (suite 212) for a discussion titled “New & Next Home Design Trends with Apartment Therapy. Click here to register and view the entire WNWN schedule and website.
“Glorious Gardens: Private Edens of the World’s Leading Interior Designers,” by Dara Caponigro (Monacelli)
We love beautiful gardens. Especially when they’re curated by Dara Caponigro, Editor-in-Chief of FREDERIC and Creative Director of Schumacher. In this new title, Caponigro culled together inspiring gardens belonging to talented interior designers, giving us a peek into their peaceful sanctuaries. Think Michelle Nussbaumer’s family retreat in San Miguel de Allende and Veere Grenney’s magical cliffside garden in Tangier, Morocco.
The book invites readers into the enchanting outdoor spaces that serve as personal retreats and wellsprings of inspiration for famed designers, including Katie Ridder, Maxine Sloss, Stephen Sills, Thomas O’Brien, Mark D. Sikes, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Paul Wiseman, and Charlotte Moss, among others. Richly illustrated with hundreds of stunning images across the book’s oversized pages, Glorious Gardens is a feast for the eyes, showcasing the intricate details and sweeping vistas of these extraordinary gardens.
“Stephen Sills: A Vision For Design,” by Stephen Sills (Rizzoli)
Stephen Sills is a designer recognized for his unique artistic voice and is renowned for his ability not only to design innovative and beautiful rooms but also to establish a pervasive atmosphere of luxury and calm. This book is an in-depth look at several of Sills’s most recent projects, stunning homes located in New York City; the West Coast of Florida; the Hamptons; New Jersey, and Connecticut, as well as Sills’s own residences.
Each story begins with mood boards that explain the inspiration for the house. The houses are bookended by essays on topics important to Sills, such as architecture, craft, landscape, and types of rooms, from primary to functional to connective spaces. The book also features a reflection on the evolution of Sills’s style, including his passion for material innovation and advice for the reader on how to continuously educate the eye.
Don’t miss Dara Caponigro and Stephen Sills for an intimate conversation at WNWN at 3:00 p.m., followed by a book signing in the Schumacher showroom, Suite 1516. Click here to register for this event and view the entire WNWN schedule and website.
