De La Vega: Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition, Defined by Innovation
Founded in 2009 by Mark de la Vega, De La Vega (DLV) has established itself as one of New York’s most distinctive furniture design studios. What began as a small atelier has grown to include a flagship showroom in the New York Design Center. With one common theme, every De La Vega piece is both a work of art and a testament to meticulous craft.
DLV is known for its bold yet refined approach to design, drawing inspiration from modernism, Art Deco, and mid-century influences while forging a style uniquely its own. At the heart of this identity is a dedication to traditional craftsmanship and forgotten techniques, most notably the Coquille d’Oeuf — a painstaking eggshell mosaic finish executed entirely by hand. This process, along with the studio’s mastery of wood, metal, upholstery, and hardware, gives DLV’s collections a rare material richness and depth.
Each design, from the sculptural Giac chair to the jewel-like Abuelo cabinet, is created through a collaborative process that can involve more than a dozen artisans. Pieces are refined until every detail — joinery, surface, patina — meets exacting standards. The result is furniture that feels both timeless and contemporary, meant to be lived with, evolve, and even improve over generations.
The New York Design Center showroom reflects this philosophy, presenting collections that balance strength and elegance, innovation and tradition. The space is more than a display — it is an immersion into the world of De La Vega, where one can sense the dialogue between form, material, and technique that defines the brand.
Yet this journey has not been without challenges. Last week, a devastating five-alarm fire swept through a Red Hook warehouse, destroying the workspaces of many Brooklyn makers, including De La Vega’s own workshop. The blaze consumed years of prototypes, materials, and equipment, leaving the studio to grapple with an incalculable loss. Sadly, DLV has lost access to finished pieces and materials and are unable to continue to work in the building because of the destruction. Currently, they are searching for a temporary studio space to continue operations. Please consider donating to help this incredible and worthy company move forward after this incredible loss.
