Bridge Between Beyond by Merida Studios
Merida’s newest collection is guided by nature and a deeply spiritual lens. Artistic Director Sylvie Johnson draws inspiration from her travels and encounters with cultures beyond her own. Among the influential experiences of her journey is her time in Japan, where subtle beauty resides in the ephemeral and the meticulously crafted.
Bridge Between Beyond, is a curated exhibition that traces Johnson’s experience in Japan through the placement of her rugs. The gallery unfolds as a linear gradient, where figurative forms blur into abstraction, and color transitions reflect a gradual metamorphosis. The arrangement invites visitors to follow a narrative journey, paced by materiality and emotional threads.
Echoing a time and place that feels both near and far, Bridge Between Beyond invites discovery and meditation through the sensorial invocation woven in Johnson’s art.
From intimate meals shared in red lacquerware to visits to Shinto shrines, Johnson was captivated by the elegance found in daily routines. She connected with the meaning hidden within the small details– the seamless wood joinery, the pearl-inlaid motifs, and the quiet patina of ceramics that reveals the passage of time. These elements spoke to a philosophy of mastery that resonated deeply with her artistic practice.
