The Rug Company’s Head of Product Design & Collaborations, Ying-Ying Birabi, discusses the inspiration behind this collection, experimenting with new materials and what type of interiors these designs are tailored for.

Q: What encouraged the creation of this collection?

A: In 2018, we launched our first design-led deep pile Merino collection, introducing distinct design elements that quickly became a source of inspiration for creative interior applications. Building on the success of that debut, we set out to refine and elevate the collection by emphasizing more organic, flowing lines and abstract geometric shapes. This time, we explored new materials, varying pile heights, and carving techniques, aiming to bring fresh energy and dimension to the collection.

Q: What are the inspirations behind this collection?

A:  This collection draws inspiration from the organic lines and irregular patterns that surround the mountainous regions of the world. We wanted to emphasize these natural elements through a range of innovative techniques, from delicately carved rugs to bolder contrasts of tone and material. We were captivated by the contrast between plush, high-pile textures and raw, streamlined materials — a combination we felt would bring a unique depth to our work.

Q: How did you choose which materials to use?

A: Driven by a vision to create textural designs with dimensional depth and contrast, we embarked on an exploration of jute and nettle. While these fibers have long held a place in rug-making traditions, pairing them with deep pile Merino felt refreshing. Jute’s appeal lay in its sandy hues and uniform, flat yarn, which allowed us to create clean, defined lines. Nettle, on the other hand, brought cooler undertones with its natural variations in yarn width and color, lending an added layer of texture. Together, these materials offer a refined yet grounded aesthetic.

Q: What qualities do these designs bring to a space?

A: First and foremost, their plush texture creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, making any room feel cozier and more comfortable. The softness underfoot provides a luxurious feel, perfect for spaces where you want to relax or unwind. Aesthetically, the deep pile adds depth and dimension, complementing various interior styles from modern to rustic. The organic lines and abstract geometric shapes featured throughout the collection bring an artistic touch, enhancing the overall scheme of any space.
