Townhouse Kitchens: Behind the Brand
What are the origins of the brand?
Townhouse Kitchens was started based on the concept of being a nurturing environment for women in the kitchen design business. Women often do not thrive in such a heavy construction centric environment unless supported. As women are the most likely to utilize a kitchen, they are a uniquely talented design resource in the kitchen design world.
How did it get started? Townhouse Kitchens was started by Joy Young, who had worked for other kitchen design businesses for eleven years. Joy started the business out of her own apartment, and within the first year of the business an opportunity arose to have a small footprint showroom in the New York Design Center. The New York Design Center seemed like the perfect space for the owner to increase the staff and have an intimate meeting space with her curated clientele.
What were the early successes of the brand?
Some of the early successes of the brand are attributable to the location in the New York Design Center, other showroom owners in the building quickly began referring Joy to their clients. Additionally, many of Joy’s clients of the previous eleven years chose to continue their business relationship. Both of these sources of client projects contributed to Townhouse Kitchens building a portfolio of beautiful projects that represented the clients design style, with each project looking different than their friends and neighbors. The projects span the design spectrum from contemporary to traditional, and the work has received design finalist awards from both Westchester Home Magazine, and the Wolf Subzero Design Contest.
What is exciting about the brand today?
We continue to expand our pool of talented designers, and we are always engaging in our search for new and cutting-edge cabinetry finishes and design styles. We often drive industry innovation with our willingness to work with unusual materials and are not afraid to utilize our designs and tools to create unique looks for client design projects.
What has changed since the brand was founded? One of the exciting parts of our business journey is that we continue to develop new interior designer and architect relationships while continuing our relationships with our longtime customers. Those relationships often introduce us to new and different design perspectives, which result in a more flexible approach to our designer and architect design requests.
What is significant about the brand being at 200 Lex?
Our experience of being in the New York Design Center is that we are an industry inspiration. The New York Design Center is where architects and designers from across the country and around the world come to seek design inspiration. The exposure to this incredible cross-section of designers and architects has helped to expand our design vision. The New York Design Center provides an amazing environment where showrooms collaborate to promote one another’s businesses by placing complementary products in each other’s showrooms, to foster sales.
Are there any exciting things happening for the brand in the future?
Based on past successes and loyal designer following, Townhouse Kitchens recently undertook an enormous business expansion in the form of a much more substantial showroom. The larger showroom features working Wolf, Subzero, and Gaggenau appliances so that we can engage in cooking adventures with our kitchen design clients. In addition, the expanded space of the showroom allows us to better show the breadth of design styles we offer, from traditional to contemporary, while also showcasing a much larger variety of finishes.
Where will the brand be in 5/10 years?
With the expanded showroom, that facilitates cooking experiences with our clients, we expect to become one of the premier kitchen design companies in New York City. And soon we expect to expand our design staff to support some of the most notable kitchen design projects in the country.
What do you want people to know about the brand that they may not?
Townhouse Kitchens is unique in the kitchen design world with our dedication to supporting every aspect of the design process. From initial consultation to project completion, our team is dedicated to providing assistance and guidance to the client, designer, and contractor. We provide photographic renderings of the kitchen to the client and designer to help visualize the final outcome, and we spend a great deal of time on construction sites with the contractor to better facilitate a smooth and quick installation process for the client. We also have the advantage of having all of our products produced in Pennsylvania, which makes expediting the process much easier to accommodate getting parts and pieces for last-minute construction changes.
