Spring Trend Report: An Interview with Merida’s Artistic Director, Sylvie Johnson
Artistic director of Merida Studio counts herself lucky that work is a passion, not a job. “When you are creating you are so lucky – nothing bad can really happen to you if you have a pen and notebook,” she says. “I think that any kind of beauty can be something that can heal.”
Saana Baker, founder of The Textile Eye, an industry journal covering the latest in home textiles, surface design, arts and interior design, sat down with Sylvie for the publication’s recently released Spring trend report. In the interview Sylvie shares what sparks her creativity (reading books and poetry are among her top sources), the process of innovating and incorporating unconventional weaving methods, the importance of practice and research to be at the top of your game, the newest products from Merida and so much more.
“Beauty is the key against darkness,” Sylvie tells Saana to conclude the interview. “We have to be defending more heartily, beauty: more heartily, effort for beauty; more heartily practice for beauty; more heartily, the purpose of beauty. This is hope; the only hope is beauty.”
